The Theft of the American Dream
The Stamp Act, Tea Act, Sugar Act, Quartering Act, Sedition Act and a number of other legislative enactments, were catalysts which spurred on the American Revolution. Through the enactment of these laws, Britain sought to impose bureaucratic tyranny over the colonies in order to exert "big government" control over them. Our brave forefathers fought back. A new country was born and a new ideal became the bedrock that supported this great new nation. The American Dream was born. What is the American Dream? It is many things. In its simplest denominator it is the opportunity to pursue the creation of wealth and assets and the right to keep such wealth and assets from the hands of the government.
Bureaucratic tyranny, the imposition of one law after another by government, is like a very sophisticated thief in the night. This thief breaks into our home, like any other thief, with the intent of taking our wealth away from us. But, unlike the run of the mill thief, this thief does not steal everything all at once. This thief takes one item one day, then a few weeks later, another item and on and on. At first we hardly notice the missing items. But over time the realization sinks in that we were robbed. We are poorer than we were before and we can't point to any one event in which our wealth disappeared.
Since the election of FDR, America has been the victim of bureaucratic tyranny. Through the imposition of one law after another, the very politicians we elect to protect us and preserve the American Dream, have taken away our liberties and our wealth in small portions. We hardly noticed it happening. First there was the enactment of Social Security, then Medicare, then Medicaid. Now, we are faced with the mother of all bureaucratic tyrannical legislative acts...the enactment of health care reform. Health care reform will change the face of this country like no other piece of legislation in the history of America. Government will control the lives of every American, except the super-wealthy, who will be able to afford more expensive, superior private medical care that will no doubt still exist. Every move the average citizen makes will be dictated by big brother. Freedoms we take for granted today, like seeing a physician when we feel we need to, will be governed by a bureaucracy that dictates who we will see and when we will be permitted to see them. Our hard fought American liberties will be washed away by the stroke of a pen.
This morass of laws has one objective. To seize power away from its citizens and place it in the hands of centralized government. Our federal government has become too big and too imposing. It's power has never been greater. The byproduct of these efforts to commandeer power have created a financial mess. Our nation is facing a $12 trillion deficit. This deficit is so large that it may very well be beyond the point of fixing. What is at stake is not just the survival of the American Dream. It is the very survival of America itself.
