North Carolina Increases Sales Tax

The North Carolina Department of Revenue has announced that as a result of the additional 1% state rate increase effective September 1, 2009, the combined state and county tax rate will increase to 8.25% in Mecklenburg County, 8% in Alexander, Catawba, Cumberland, Haywood, Martin, Pitt, Sampson, and Surry Counties, and 7.75% in the remaining 91 counties.

Prospective retirees who were giving North Carolina serious consideration will now have to reconsider North Carolina as an affordable retirement destination. Sales tax is a major expense factor for retirees and must be heavily weighted when considering a retirement destination. North Carolina may have just taken themselves off the Affordable Place To Retire list.
